Greetings in the Name of the Risen One,

It’s on days like this that I lean into that promise: “the risen one.” How do we have hope and joy when images of Alan Kurdi slice through our hearts?

“How long, to sing this song?” (Psalm 40)

The gospel does not leave us only with an assurance of unfathomable grace, but also the courage to be the embodiment of irrepressible, defiant, and lived grace:

Christ has no body on the earth now, but yours.

No hands, no feet on earth, but yours.

Yours are the eyes through which Christ looks at the world with compassion.

Yours are the feet with which Christ walks to do good.

Yours are the hands on which Christ relies to offer blessing.

Yours are the hands, yours are the feet, yours are the eyes;

you are the body of Christ.

Christ no longer has any other body on this earth but yours.

–St. Teresa of Avila

We join many others around the world in cries and prayers for Alan’s father and all those who are seeking refuge. I am so grateful for the practical work that has been done to support incoming Syrian families. Special thanks to Sue Bernjak, Mary Anderson, Bev Ward, Joan & Marcel Yaskiw, and all who have helped. Yesterday we received this update:

The Refuge Steering Committee met this week and we are cautiously optimistic (not to mention excited!) that the families will arrive this month. The Housing Committee has rented a duplex, which can accommodate 2 of the families,  near Misericordia for Sept 1 and are looking for a third property.  We have a generous amount of household goods stored at SMRUC for the families.

This Sunday, the Tree of Life and Journey streams will begin holding their respective services. Rainbow youth are invited to join either service.  Communion will be offered in both.

In Tree of Life, with the story of Jonah, we will discuss our choices and the impact they have on people around us.

In Journey we start our Season of Creation series. Our theme over the whole year is “Joy.” This week and up until Oct. 4th (St. Francis of Assisi Sunday), we explore different ways that Joy is found in creation. Over the Season of Creation we will use some of Jesus’ parables to stir our hearts.

After what was hopefully a wonderful summer, Rainbow registration begins next week.  Registration forms will be available at the church along with adult volunteer sign up forms.

Worship starts at 10:15 and all are welcome!  Or come a bit earlier for Fair Trade Coffee.

We look forward to seeing you!

Shalom, Salaam, Shanti, Béke, Peace,

Alice & Philip
